Challenging inequality in Virtual Production through collaboration with the screen industries.
Reframe VP is an AHRC funded project run at the University of York. The project brings together workers, employers, and experts to co-produce interventions that transform how equality, diversity and inclusion are practiced in the UK’s evolving film and television industry.
About
Reframe VP has developed out of work undertaken on the Screen Industries Growth Network (SIGN) and XR Stories projects, which the University of York led between 2019 and 2024. SIGN sought to address diversity and inclusion challenges in the Yorkshire and Humber screen industries, alongside skills and training interventions, business support and a research programme. Through this work, we developed insights about, and responses to the structural problems many creative industries workers encounter when entering and progressing within the sector. On the XR Stories project, members of the Reframe VP team investigated the emergence of virtual production. This research examined the evolving geographies of screen production and how virtual production approaches intersect with the exclusion and discrimination issues prevalent across screen industries. The team’s experience on these projects helped identify opportunities and challenges for VP to address equity, diversity and inclusion in the screen industries, and led to the development of Reframe VP.
